A plumber can work on your heating system (radiators, pipework etc), but cannot work on the boiler or the gas pipe. The main difference between a plumber and a heating engineer is that a plumber does not carry any gas safe qualifications.

A non-registered person may carry out 'wet work', ie install water pipes and radiators for a heating system, but any work on the gas boiler itself and the final connection of the water pipework to the boiler, must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Plumbers typically work on heating systems, including radiators and pipework, but not all of them are qualified to work on the boiler itself or the gas pipe. However, these days you'll find that some plumbers have also trained as Gas Safe engineers – making them well-equipped to repair a gas boiler.

You install, maintain and repair gas boilers, perform routine safety inspections and issue gas safety certificates. Other jobs for a gas engineer include installing and maintaining other gas appliances such as cookers, gas fires, hot water cylinders and more.
